Schools kids cook up a storm!
Being unable to read through the recipes from the Upper North Island without feeling hungry, I knew we were in for a treat and was really looking forward to the regional final in Auckland.
12 teams had created and perfected their meals and were ready for the cook off. So all that was left was for myself and fellow judges Michael Lee, host of the 4:30 show and Silver Fern, Kaylah Cullen to meet the teams, taste their meals and pick a winner. Should be easy right?
Oh if only we had known just how difficult it would be. It seemed we all had our favourites, Kaylah loved the kale chips served up by Pukekohe, while the Queenz Cookers from Melville Intermediate school, impressed us all a tasty chicken in chilli and satay sauce. And I have to admit to being a fan of a good roast, so probably ate more than I should have of Kio Kio school’s roast chicken and kumara couscous. And it seemed we were never going to be able to pull Michael away from the Kiwi Chicken Mareq.
All up there were 12 amazing dishes, meaning that the judging deliberations went on for quite some time, but eventually we reached a consensus on Sancta Maria College. They served up a mouth-watering chicken, cashew nut and sugar snap stir fry that was cooked perfectly while also delivering great portion control.
There is no doubt about it, the Upper North set the benchmark high.
