It was a real treat to have swimming icon and Commonwealth games gold medallist, Lauren Boyle, join the judges for the lower North Island regional finals of the MAGGI Kitchen Showdown.

I’m not sure if it was the inspiration of Lauren’s gold medal that encouraged the teams, but there is no doubt that had this been the culinary Olympics there would have been some gold medals handed out.

Homemade bread is always a strong contender, so when I spied some homemade flatbread I just had to sneak a quick taste, before being enticed by the Wanganui Wisks who were making kasespatzle – a German style pasta with cheese- they were making it from scratch which is really fun to see, this gave us an indication of what we could expect from the lower north.

Creative use of MAGGI products was also being demonstrated at the highest level by the 4 Amigos from Havelock North, who used a pumpkin and roasted garlic soup mix as the base for their hummus, oh yum! There is no doubt about it, the lower north are going for gold, and with Cornish pasties, courgette twisters, homemade carrot fritters also appearing I think this could be the region to beat.
